When pondering where to dine last week on an especially sweltering Tuesday, I racked my brain for one of those restaurants that serves ladies-who-lunch fare. By that I mean gazpacho, vichyssoise, salads, and dishes made with bright-coloured ingredients like lemon, lobster, basil and tomatoes. But Montreal is going through a he-man food phase right now, so lately I'm faced with ribs, steaks, duck legs and pig's heads all paired with some form of crispy potato. Isn't any chef in this city up to reinventing the Waldorf salad? Sheesh.

Anyway, when narrowing choices, I ended up with an Italian restaurant that didn't have a spot on their terrace, and Globe, one of those glitzy restaurants on The Main that does the lion's share of its business during Grand Prix weekend and after 10 p.m. So Globe it was, primarily because I had no idea what to expect.

I always liked this restaurant's bold approach, which, with towering seafood platters and honking rib-eyes, was always more macho in style than lunching ladies. However, an obvious effort has been made this year to turn things around. First the decor was spruced up. When I dined there during the High Lights Festival in March, I felt a new sense of energy in the room, which looked so pretty with its long rows of seats, elegant light fixtures and the gorgeous-as-ever wait staff. A few months later while strolling past the terrace on Grand Prix weekend, I gawked at the crowds spilling out of the place. It seemed Globe still had the power to draw in the beautiful people.

NOUVELLE PORTUGUESE

When the chefs came to town, traditional cooking gave way to cutting-edge gastronimical fare. Not a sardine in sight, but we did see a few splashes of El Bulli-Inspired foam.

Chef at the hip restaurant 100 Maneiras, Stanisic cooked up a gorgeous meal at the Globe. His fresh cheese mousse with pumpkin squash sorbet dessert (a nod to a classic Portuguese dessert of requeijao cheese and pumpkin jam) was a triumph, as was his cold potato soup and pistachio-crusted lamb loin...

10 great places to spend Christmas

Click through to see Travel + Leisure's best places to stay, enjoy a holiday dinner and pick up stocking stuffers, from Bali to Santa Cruz

Montreal, Quebec
Why Go: A quiet celebration in the city that Harriet Beecher Stowe called "a mountain of churches," a spin in an outdoor ice-skating center such as Patinoire du Bassin Bonsecours in Old Montreal.
Where to Stay: After shopping in the frosty air, choose a hotel with a heated outdoor pool: the Hilton Montreal Bonaventure (doubles from $145).
Holiday Dinner: Because most restaurants are closed December 24 and 25, it's best to have a fabulous meal early. At the loungey, elegant Restaurant Globe (dinner for two $170), chef's duck margret with Chinese eggplant and orange braised fennels is a perfect stand-in for goose.
Stocking Stuffer: Enjoy old-fashionned edibles such as juicy oranges and imported chestnuts at outdoor markets such as le Marché Jean-Talon (maple candies and regional cheeses) and le Marché Atwater (chocolates and pastries).-- Dara Y. Herman
